Michael House

Michael House is a filmmaker and composer from San Francisco. Before starting to work as a director in 2008, he composed film and television music. The first feature-length documentary he directed, Eugène and Berenice -- Pioneers of Urban Photography, gave an in-depth look into the work of photographers Eugène Atget and Berenice Abbott. The film was broadcast in a dozen countries and toured through the museum circuit from Estonia to Canada.

House continued to film successful exposés about artistic icons. His 2010 film The Magnificent Tati detailed the French film icon Jacques Tati and was followed by Revealing Mr. Maugham, a film about the life and work of British author W. Somerset Maugham. Monocle magazine included Revealing Mr. Maugham in its list of five must-see films in 2012. In 2013, House finished Meeting Shakespeare, a film starring British actor Simon Callow and following his new one-person stage show on William Shakespeare.

Fred Lyon: Living through the Lens made its world premiere at the YBCA in San Francisco in fall 2013, and has aired on international television and screened in film festivals such as the 2014 FIFA Film Festival in Montréal Canada.

House currently heads SWiM Cinema, an online resource for artists, and is editing a film about Vladimir Nabokov, author of Lolita.
