Verasphere: A Love Story In Costume follows two San Francisco artists, David Faulk and Michael Johnstone, who fall in love at the height of the AIDS epidemic. While most of their community is overcome with grief and rage, David and Michael also discover an unlikely joy through the creation of Mrs. Vera, an outrageous costumed character made from found materials. What begins as an intimate art project and a way to pass the time while battling illness soon takes on a life of its own. Now 25 years later, a large and diverse community has evolved around Mrs. Vera, all centered around one day of costumed celebration in the San Francisco Pride Parade.
Director Bio
Robert James began his cinematic career by attending film classes at San Francisco City College in his late 40s. After interning with documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner, the two co-directed the award-winning short film Library of Dust in 2011. This led to a 7-year project about sex and religion that is currently in development. Robert has completed his first feature-length documentary, Ruminations, about drag hippie icon Rumi Missabu of The Cockettes. The short documentary Verasphere: A Love Story in Costume is being adapted into a feature-length film.
Robert’s Bay Area film company, NuReality Productions, is continually at work on new projects, adhering to their motto: "I’m Not Done."
