On the day when California's breast density notification law goes into effect -- in an effort to make women aware that dense breast tissue is a risk factor for breast cancer -- another major study confirms that hormone replacement therapy a not just risk factor for the disease but equally likely to lead to deadly cancers.
Previous studies had indicated that breast cancers in women who took hormone replacement were less likely to be deadly. This study, part of the Women's Health Initiative including 70,000 post-menopausal women, shows that breast cancers in women taking hormone replacement are equally likely to be deadly as those in women who did not take the hormones.
