Funded by UK-based market research company \u003ca href=\"http://www.kantar.com/\" title=\"Kantar\">Kantar\u003c/a> and judged by a panel of experts including \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Eno\" title=\"Brian Eno - Wikipedia\">Brian Eno\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://www.brainpickings.org/\" title=\"Brain Pickings (Maria Popova)\">Maria Popova\u003c/a>, the competition's results were \u003ca href=\"http://www.informationisbeautifulawards.com/2012/09/information-is-beautiful-awards-winners/\" title=\"Information is Beautiful Awards\">announced\u003c/a> at the end of September. The interactive infographic pairs a map of Afghanistan or Iraq with a map of the United States (which can zoom out to the world) to illustrate the beginnings (hometowns) and ends (casualty locations) of US and Coalition soldiers since 2001. You can click on a location for more information and an opportunity to share memories of each veteran. As for well-presented data, can it mislead as well as inspire? Two gold Information is Beautiful awards went to entries related to war--perennially fertile ground for propaganda.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But my favorite winner was the visualization of a process older than war, older than mankind, older than life on earth: the cycles of the moon.
