Last month I wrote about an initiative by Change.org to bring together 100 engineers and designer for a 24-hour hackathon. The goal was to come up with an application that positively affects the world around us -- in other words, hack for change.

With the challenge now concluded, I'm excited to share the top winners, each of which will receive a small amount of seed funding to further the development of their web or mobile application. In total 17 applications were created, most too new to share with the public, but hopefully that will be changing. Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist.org, along with a panel of judges came together to choose the winners.

The top prize was awarded to a team that built a community based SMS service, "Good Neighbor", which sends messages to those in your community asking for a favor or helping hand.

The first runner up went to "Project AnonyMouse", which connects members of the LGBT community with mentors. Finally, the second runner up was "FindMeAPet.org", that sends an SMS when a dog arrives at your local shelter.

Hack for Change is a testament to the belief that not all hackers are malicious; many are looking for ways to make the world a brighter place -- one app at a time.
