San Francisco, California, February 15, 2011 – Help build a nation of readers! Every year, the National Education Association (NEA) celebrates literacy with Read Across America Day, held each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books, and more than 50 million parents, children, and teachers will participate. KQED, the national presenting station of PBS’s The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! will join the following Bay Area events with books, prizes, and photo opportunities with the Cat in the Hat, the longtime ambassador of Read Across America Day.

Bay Area Discovery Museum, Sausalito, CA

Thursday, February 24 from 12-1pm

Start the Read Across America Day celebration at the Bay Area Discovery Museum! Museum attendees will enjoy a special interactive storytime featuring Dr. Seuss books, and get a chance to meet the Cat in the Hat in person. Don’t forget your camera! Free with museum admission.

Think College Now and International Community School, Oakland, CA

Wednesday, March 2 from 3:30-5:30pm

Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Pajama Party! The students, teachers, and even the principal at the International Community School will celebrate Read Across America Day with a pajama party school assembly featuring readings of Dr. Seuss books. KQED will be on hand for the party with the Cat himself, bookmarks and an activity guide for the readers, and door prizes of PBS KIDS DVDs. (Note: this event is for students and is not open to the public)

Westgate Mall, San Jose, CA (Saratoga & Hamilton Avenues)

Wednesday, March 9 from 10am-12pm

Continue the fun with children’s music entertainment and a storybook reading with Dr. Seuss books at Westage Mall in San Jose. After the reading, join the Cat in the Hat for a meet-and-greet and bring your camera for a photo with the Cat! This event is part of Westgate Mall’s Mommy & Me and Daddies Too monthly event.
