Social media and tabloids have been spinning themselves into a tizzy over the last few days thanks to repeated sightings of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, out and about in Los Angeles, eating food and riding bicycles together. TMZ reports that Gomez broke up with boyfriend of the last 10 months, The Weeknd, "several weeks ago" and "Justin didn't waste any time swooping in." But what if these two have secretly been together all along?

Think about it: you're two of the biggest pop stars in the world, both of you are dogged relentlessly by paparazzi, being together just amplifies the attention -- so isn't it better to pretend you're no longer a thing? Officially speaking, Bieber and Gomez split back in 2014, after three years of on-and-off dating, but the two have remained oddly committed to talking about each other this entire time. Could it be a case of pop stars who doth protest too much? Maybe all of their drama the last few years was just a smokescreen to keep their relationship secret.

Bieber has admitted that tracks, "Mark My Words" and "What Do You Mean?" are about Gomez, and Gomez's "Love Will Remember" is reportedly about Justin. According to E!, a "leaked" demo of the track even featured a voicemail from Bieber. "Obviously, 'Love Will Remember' is a personal song to me," Gomez told InStyle, "and I don't really need to say anything. I think my fans will get it.” Ooooh, coy!

Even back in 2015, not long after their split, Bieber told his pal Ellen DeGeneres that he and Gomez might reunite one day, saying: "I think maybe, once we figure ourselves out, we can come together and make an awesome duo." Biebs is a confident young man to say the least, but at the time, this statement totally contradicted any evidence the pair had previously given the public that reconciliation could ever be a thing.

In March 2016, Gomez and Bieber dropped hints online again that they may be together. Bieber posted an old photo of them kissing, and Gomez "liked" the photo. Shortly afterward, the two were seen hanging out at one of his shows in L.A. Then Gomez released "Feel Me," a track many people presumed was about Bieber, thanks to the lyrics:

"No one loves you like I love you,
I never cheated, never lied,
I never put no one above you,
I gave you space and time,
And now you’re telling me you miss me,
And I’m still on your mind,
We were one in a million,
Our love is hard to find.”

Just days after press and fans speculated about this, Gomez made a big stink on stage in Fresno, when a fan held up a sign reading "Marry Justin Please." Gomez grabbed it and crumpled it up, seemingly genuinely angry.

Just three months later, Bieber conveniently spent August making a big show about dating Sofia Richie -- a woman who basically looks like Selena Gomez in a blond wig -- then broke up with her after only one month. During that month, when Bieber told off fans for criticizing Richie online, Gomez remained ever present and chimed in:

To make matters even more intriguing, rumors have been rife for the last year that Gomez's relationship with The Weeknd was fake. StyleCaster called it out from the very beginning with an article titled "This is Why Selena Gomez and The Weeknd are a Fake Relationship." Plus, Wendy Williams chimed in earlier this year, stating: "I don’t believe that Selena Gomez and The Weeknd are a real couple... First of all, they were spotted kissing outside of a restaurant in L.A... the restaurant they were at... it’s where you go when you want to be photographed. They just stand there all day with their cameras waiting to photograph somebody."

Not only would a hidden relationship keep the pressure off Bieber and Gomez, but it would also permit Bieber to indulge in bad boy antics without damaging Gomez's reputation by association. It could be no coincidence that Gomez is willing to go public with Bieber again, now that he's won back the trust of the public and become an outspoken Christian.

Or maybe these two are just living out the most real life soap opera-est relationship since Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. Either way, they're doing an excellent job of keeping themselves in the press. The plot is bound to thicken.
