Superstar DJs might be a relatively new phenomenon, but they are some of the biggest money-makers in music. Last year, according to Forbes, Calvin Harris made $63 million, Tiësto made $38 million, and Diplo made $23 million. These incredibly rich musicians (technicians?) live unbelievably lavish, globe-trotting lifestyles, while managing to stay relatively anonymous -- a luxury not afforded to pop or movie stars. It is undoubtedly enviable, but can sometimes be an irritating sight for us regular folk.
Turns out that Diplo surprisingly knows that. Which is where Viceland's new series, What Would Diplo Do?, comes in. The Major Lazer producer has signed off and consulted on the show, which sees -- in a stroke of comedic genius -- James Van Der Beek playing an extremely smug and hatable version of the real-life Diplo. The trailers are in and this little slice of post-modern brilliance looks legitimately funny.
The series only came into being, thanks to a hilarious short video Van Der Beek shot for Diplo, as part of the promotional campaign for the DJ's Mad Decent Block Party tour last summer. If the series is even half as good as this, Viceland is bound to have a winner on its hands:
