This week, Justin Bieber unexpectedly canceled the rest of his Purpose Tour, with very little explanation. On Monday, a notice went up on the singer’s Facebook page that read:
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Justin Bieber will cancel the remainder of the Purpose World Tour concerts. Justin loves his fans and hates to disappoint them. He thanks his fans for the incredible experience of the Purpose World Tour over last 18 months. He is grateful and honored to have shared that experience with his cast and crew for over 150 successful shows across 6 continents during this run. However, after careful consideration he has decided he will not be performing any further dates. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase.”
For the agonizing hours that have since passed, fans on Twitter have been commiserating over their lost opportunity to see Biebs live and in the flesh. So what possible reason does JB have for canceling the final 14 dates, when he’s already completed 152?
Let’s explore possible reasons for Justin Bieber to bail so late in the game.
1. Being Sick of His Own Damn Show
A friend of mine, who used to sing in a relatively popular band, once explained to me why he quit his successful musical career for more conventional professional pursuits. “Touring an album feels a bit silly after a while,” he said. “You take a year to make a record, then you go on tour with that record for another year. It feels like the equivalent of doing a painting, then traveling around just showing different audiences the painting every night. Almost immediately, you just want to go home and make another painting, but you can’t because not everyone has seen the first one yet.”
Justin Bieber has probably gone home because he’s sick of the Purpose painting. It is, after all, almost two years old at this point.
2. Taking Care of His Mental Health
From the get-go, the Purpose World Tour was going to be a grueling proposition. Being on tour isn’t as glamorous as a lot of people think. It’s a series of green rooms and buses and planes and hotel rooms and concrete corridors at faceless stadiums. And Justin Bieber has been living like that since March 2016. Wanna know how long ago that was? It was the same month the primaries happened. Feels like a lifetime, right? Now imagine not being home for that entire time and imagine being trapped in all of those alien places because you’re too famous to go outside. It would kinda suck. Mental health is important, as is self-care. Do what you gotta do to stay well, Biebs.
3. Being a Selfish, Lazy Oaf
You’ve got one job, Justin Bieber! Yes, it’s a long tour, but think about Britney Spears, who has been doing the same show night-in, night-out since December 2013! By the time she’s done, Brit will have been immersed in her Vegas residency for four entire years! And so far, she’s managed to only cancel three shows — due to an ankle sprain. Be professional, Justin; be like Britney. You only had two weeks left — you should’ve done it for the kids. Surely the home stretch is the easiest one?
4. True Bromance
Twitter has been all a-flutter since the news of the cancelation broke, speculating about whether or not Bieber’s decision to quit the tour is related to the young man he’s been seen out and about — and really rather close — with lately. Who is this mystery man? Stylist? Trainer? New BFF? New BF? Everyone on Twitter (and their moms) seems to be hoping it’s the latter…
5. He’s Living for Jesus Now
TMZ reports that Bieber quit the Purpose tour because he has decided to “rededicate his life to Christ.” The Mercury News goes so far as to say the singer has quit to start his own church, and some people on Twitter are saying he’s going to become a pastor. What’s more? That hottie he’s been cozying up with — turns out his name is Carl Lentz — also appears to be a pastor. Mutual friend Judah Smith, pastor of the City Church of Seattle, recently posted an Instagram pic of himself, Bieber, and Lentz on a golf course together, and later praised Biebs for “fighting for [his] faith.”
The plot thickens…
