For a few minutes last night, the 2016 Critics' Choice Awards bore a strange resemblance to the 2009 MTV VMAs. When Leslie Mann and Christian Slater announced Silicon Valley as the winner of the Best Comedy Series statue, Keith Stanfield took the stage. "I want to thank everybody for honoring us in this way," he told the audience of celebrities and industry folks. "We worked very hard on Silicon Valley and here we are. Thank you."
It was a nice and quick speech. The only problem: Stanfield has nothing to do with the production of the HBO sitcom. Instead, he plays Darius on Atlanta, Donald Glover's acclaimed new FX show about two cousins breaking into the city's rap scene, which was up for consideration in the same category.
After Stanfield returned to his seat, Tom Lassally, a confused Silicon Valley executive producer, accepted the award. "No idea who that was," he said. Guess he hasn't seen Short Term 12, Selma, Straight Outta Compton, or King Ripple, a short horror film that was featured in season four of KQED's Film School Shorts, which you can watch below.
