Update: Knew this sounded too good to be true. New York Magazine got ahold of Rihanna's people, who said this story -- which was picked up in the last 24 hours by Vogue, USA Today, and many others -- is false, and Rihanna has not in fact announced a marijuana line. Yet.

Original post:

Back in the olden days, it used to be that if a celebrity wanted to make some easy extra dough with a branded product line, his or her options were fairly limited.

Everyone from Bruce Willis to Mariah Carey to Avril Lavigne has issued a fragrance, though these reviews for Taylor Swift's are still the funniest. For hip-hop stars like Jay Z and E-40, branded liquor lines -- whether it's high-end champagne or nuclear waste-colored cocktail-in-a-bottle -- are still de rigueur.

Well, kiddos, the future has arrived. And it smells a little skunky.

While speaking at a cannabis convention in Negril, Jamaica this week, Rihanna announced her new line of marijuana, according to reggae website covering the event.

"MaRihanna by Rihanna is truly the first mainstream cannabis brand in the world and proud to be a pioneer," she apparently declared to a likely somewhat giggly audience at the Cannabis Cup. "MaRihanna is blazing a trail for the industry."

It's blazing, y'all. I mean, kind of. Ri-Ri does follow other stoner-celeb-entrepreneurs like Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg into the booming bud business. But she's certainly the first pop star to have both a lipstick line with M.A.C. and a proud, public affinity for THC.

Reports say the brand will be on sale in places where that's legal -- Colorado, Alaska, Oregon, and Washington -- during the first quarter of 2016. And possibly in California not long after, if that guy who started Napster has anything to do with it. But truth be told, Rihanna fans are a patient bunch: We've already been sitting here twiddling our thumbs in anticipation of her eighth album, whose release date keeps getting pushed back, for a solid three years.

You guys wanna order a pizza for the wait?
