Sick of All Your Music? Here Are the New Fall Albums You Need

Last April, one of my favorite moody boys, Robert Alfons of Trust, came through the city and I missed him! I will not be making that mistake twice. Instead, I'll be dancing my head off to Trust's "ecstatic glee and exquisite gloom" on September 28 at Mezzanine (you can too; tickets are still available!). And that's just scratching the surface of all the bands who have new offerings in the works for fall. Here are some of our favorites:

The long awaited, much anticipated debut album of Banks is here! Goddess is everything I wanted and hoped it would be as I fervently replayed her singles over and over these past few months. And at a whopping 18 songs, you can get your Banks fix for over an hour, which feels downright luxurious. She will be part of the Treasure Island Music Festival on October 18, 2014.

Roberto Carlos Lange, a.k.a. Helado Negro, has a new album out too. Double Youth "grapples with memory and its uncanny tendency to wear away despite our best intentions to preserve it." I'm starting to notice a pattern amongst my favorite bands; they all give me the urge to intermittently dance and then feel emotional and then dance again. However, that downplays the special brand of evocative coolness that Helado Negro embodies. See for yourself when he plays The Independent on September 20, 2014 (opening for Son Lux) or October 19, 2014 (opening for Sinkane, who is also on my list with his awesome new album, Mean Love). Lucky us!

Lately, there are also quite a few bands tapping into my nostalgic wistfulness (the perfect sensation for fall!). Interpol's newest, El Pintor, reminds me of the summer of 2002 when I was 22 and lived in New York City and listened to Turn on the Bright Lights all the time. Guilty pleasure as this new album is, it's still a pleasure.

Then there's Karen O's solo album, Crush Songs. "When I was 27 I crushed a lot," she writes of these songs. Me too, Karen, me too! While I miss the snarl and fury of her with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I can't help but feel how I always do about Karen O -- that she is the awesomest.

Rounding out the group of old school loves courting me anew are Blonde Redhead, with Barragán. I can only imagine a band that's been around for 21 years has been able to do so by having the recklessness, malleability, and inventiveness to make some phenomenal albums and some more lackluster ones too. This might be the latter, but I'm going to give it a few more listens before I truly decide because I whole heartedly appreciate any band staying relevant and interesting for over two decades! However, for nostalgia's sake, I'm including an older song, one of my all-time faves.

Some newfound discoveries are FKA Twigs and My Brightest Diamond, both with new albums. You can catch FKA Twigs at the Warfield on November 20, 2014 and My Brightest Diamond at Great American Music Hall on December 10, 2014.

And I'll leave you with two things to look forward to: T.I.'s latest will be out in October (I can't help it, he got me with "Whatever You Like" and I've never looked back), and my beloved crazy lady iamamiwhoami's latest will be out in November (there are a few singles to satiate you until then).

But the encore belongs to the ominous rock-n-roll of Esben and the Witch, a band my 15-year-old self would have loved and so I do too. With a penchant for 10 minute songs and sometimes sounding like PJ Harvey, they are just right for these shorter, darker days. Their new album, A New Nature, is out now.
