Last week The National played their song "This Is The Last Time" on both Conan and Kimmel. While everyone knows that "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines" are the Songs of the Early to Mid-Summer, those happy days when everything is a dance party, everyone is two drinks in and romance flourishes, it's becoming clear that "This Is The Last Time" is the Song of the End of Summer. It's the emotional hangover song. The everything ends song. Instead of mainly taking place in falsetto like "Blurred Lines," this song is about two registers lower than regular man-voice. And it's main thrust is that love is a swamp and that if we are ever happy, we're all going to be sad and then eventually we're all going to die (okay I may have drawn that last conclusion). But at least we can listen to The National while the sky turns gray and our dreams die or atrophy. Because they are now as ubiquitous as Daft Punk and Robin Thicke.
