Just because a family is small, doesn’t mean it’s lacking. Adam Scheer brings us this Perspective.

Think of an average family, usually, there is a mom, a dad and two or three siblings. Well, my family is made up of only two people, my mom and me. Even though her job as a financial advisor is extremely demanding, we still find time to spend together. Since it is only the two of us we are very close. Some of our favorite things to do together are playing board games, having meaningful conversations or binge watching our favorite show “Two and a Half Men.” Having a small family isn’t necessarily bad, it’s just different.

This year in my Spanish class we did a project where we each made a family tree. Most classmates had at least ten people in their family tree, I had four. My family has a history of being very small. My grandpa is an only child, my mom is an only child and I am an only child. Living in a house with only one other person who is usually busy has taught me to be very independent. Most only children grow up and don’t learn social skills because they don’t have siblings to spend time with. In my case, I feel that not having a brother or sister to hang out with has motivated me to make more plans with friends than I would have. I am a person who can’t be alone, I want to hang out with my friends no matter how tired or sick I am. I will always find a way to be with people.

What does family mean? To me, family means the people that make you feel safe, loved and comfortable. The people you can hang out with for hours and not get bored. The people that will support you when you are going through a tough time. Even though I don’t have much blood-related family, I do have friends who feel like brothers to me and I know that if I ever needed their help, I could rely on them. I never realized until this point in my life that I actually don’t have a small family.

With a Perspective, I’m Adam Scheer.
