London Breed spoke often of her experience growing up in San Francisco's housing projects as she campaigned to become the city's mayor.  (Sheraz Sadiq/KQED)

When Ed Lee died on Dec. 12, 2017, London Breed was suddenly thrust into acting as San Francisco’s mayor. Six weeks later, she was booted from that job by her progressive colleagues on the Board of Supervisors. That enraged Breed’s supporters and set the tone for a tough four-month campaign that Breed eventually won. Today, she becomes the first black woman to be sworn in as mayor of San Francisco. Her path to this historic moment started in the city’s housing projects where she grew up, just steps from City Hall.
