As U.S. Separates Families at Border, Human Rights Groups File Complaint
The Department of Homeland Security has begun separating asylum-seeking parents from their children, including several families who crossed through the San Diego ports of entry in recent months. Human rights groups filed a complaint with the department recently.

U.S. Ends El Salvador’s Protected Status, Impacting 200,000 People
The Trump administration will tell 200,000 Salvadorans to return home to their country, a country that experts say will not be safe for them. Most of these immigrants came illegally to flee a civil war during the 1990s. They were allowed to stay after a series of earthquakes devastated El Salvador at the turn of the century. Some 50,000 of these Salvadorans now live in California.

Monterey County Measure Z Voters Won’t Get Everything They Hoped For
Measure Z is the ballot measure the people of Monterey County passed in November 2016 that banned fracking. It also banned the drilling of new wells and phased out injecting oil production wastewater into the ground. Oil companies and royalty owners challenged the ban in court, and Superior Court Judge Thomas Wills issued a decision late last month.

Bill Looks to Honor Lao and Hmong Veterans
Lao and Hmong veterans who fought alongside U.S. troops in the Vietnam War could soon receive the same burial benefits as American troops if proposed legislation becomes law. Hmong veterans in the Central Valley have been fighting for this a long time.
