After battling Uber for years, European taxi drivers were handed a victory when the EU's highest court ruled that Uber is a transportation company, not merely a technology platform.

The court's ruling means that Uber will now be regulated as a transportation service in EU member states.

Depending on who (and where) you ask, Uber is either a disruptive technology platform that is remaking transportation or an extremely well-funded limousine service.

In tech-speak, Uber is one of the lucky "unicorns," a tech startup that is valued at more than $1 billion.
