Rep. Jeff Denham Says Mortgage Interest Deduction Cut Not a Deal Breaker on Tax Reform

Republicans in the U.S. Senate are moving towards a vote on a tax reform plan this week. The House of Representatives has already passed their plan, and there are a couple of key differences. The House plan cuts a tax break for mortgage interest--a popular deduction for property owners in California. But Modesto Congressman Jeff Denham, a Republican who voted for the bill, says that in his district, the mortgage tax break isn't as big a deal.

Cities Move to Regulate Marijuana Before Legalization

We're just weeks away from the recreational sale of marijuana becoming legal in California, and cities are scrambling to set up their own rules for what could be a big business. Yesterday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved laws for local sales...and rejected proposals to give neighborhoods the power to block pot shops on their own. Los Angeles is a little further behind. The city council there did make some progress on Tuesday towards establishing marijuana rules.

City officials say party's over for LA's 'party houses'

In Los Angeles, city officials are saying “party’s over” for party houses like those in the Hollywood Hills. The City Council will soon approve stiffer penalties for over-the-top house parties after the fines were endorsed by a committee on land use yesterday, and a public safety committee last month.

Remembering Gardener Ruth Bancroft

The Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek is an example of sustainable gardening that was years ahead of it's time. Bancroft, a scientist in practice if not on paper, died this week. She was 109 years old.
