A shotgun, a rifle, 800 rounds of ammunition and a bullet-proof vest were stolen from an unmarked San Mateo Sheriff's vehicle in the Tenderloin on Friday.

Firearms stolen from law enforcement agencies have been involved in multiple high profile Bay Area murders.

A Bay Area News Group investigation published last year determined that at least 944 police-issued weapons have been stolen, lost or unaccounted for since 2010.
