If shellfish are on the menu, chances are microplastics are, too. One researcher said he found "shocking numbers" of plastics in seawater.

The tiny plastic particles come from everything from toothpaste and face wash to fake snow.

A study last year found that wastewater treatment plants were discharging 7,000,000 particles each day into San Francisco Bay.

The sheer load of these particles, both plastics and non-plastics, “suggested that San Francisco Bay has more microplastic pollution than other major water bodies in the U.S.," the study said.

Now, researchers are trying to find out how much is there and whether it’s polluting marine sanctuaries.
