San Diego Mayor Calls For Building Bridges As Wall Spending Bill Moves Forward

The Trump Administration has promised to dismantle the North American Free Trade Deal, or NAFTA, and extending the border fence separating parts of the U.S. and Mexico. But when a group of border Mayors got together in San Diego, they said the U.S. should instead be building bi-national ties if it wants to keep the economy strong.

California lawmakers are looking at an overhaul of the state’s bail system, which critics say sets up a two-tier system of justice; the rich can pay to get out while the poor say locked up. There’s a movement to release more people awaiting trial, sometimes with conditions like GPS monitoring. That can also come at a cost.

When people talk about pregnant women who are behind bars, a lot of the conversation centers around whether they should be shackled during birth, which is illegal in California, and what happens to their kids while they’re locked up. In a nation where 80 percent of women in jails and prisons are mothers, parenthood and incarceration is a cold hard reality. But we rarely get to hear from the women and the doctors who take care of them.
