California Delegation Reacts to Wednesday's Congressional Shooting

Reaction from California's delegation to Congress to Wednesday morning's shooting at a congressional baseball practice:

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted, "On days like today, there are no Democrats or Republicans, only Americans united in our thoughts for the wounded."

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy tweeted, "This is a tragic moment for their families, loved ones, and the entire community on Capitol Hill."

Rep. Eric Swalwell, an East Bay Democrat, expressed shock at the incident in an early-morning interview with KQED.

"This is a charity game, for God's sake," Swalwell told KQED early Wednesday. "It's the one time a year where Republicans and Democrats can come together. The game's tomorrow night. And, you never would imagine that something like this could happen around something that's good and innocent."

Rep. Jared Huffman, another Bay Area Democrat, was at the Democratic congressional practice when he heard of the shooting at the GOP practice.

"This is a despicable act," Huffman said. "The truth is that temperatures are high in our country. Our country is divided. We've got various factors that fan the flames of division and passion, from the media to the partisan players in politics on both sides, and one hopes that an incident like this might at least provide a teachable moment for us all to try and turn the temperature down a little bit."

Rep. Nanette Barragán, a Democratic congresswoman from Los Angeles, was also at a Democratic congressional practice when she heard about the shooting.

"We were immediately in disbelief. ... It was a very emotional morning," she said. "[We were angry] that something like this could happen. The congressional baseball game is a tradition of bipartisanship where you come together. ... It causes anger that something like this could happen."
