Caltrans officials say Highway 1 through Big Sur will be closed for at least a year. In the meantime, the deserted road is serving up plenty of stories.

Join KQED's John Sepulvado on a 36-mile journey along California's isolated, lonely island. 

John's wonderful story brought back memories of hiking the closed road in February, when I did a (much shorter) trek along the coast.
