San Jose has one of the most expensive rental markets in the nation and there are signs that evictions are on the rise. Unlike cities like Oakland and San Francisco, San Jose allows for "no cause" evictions. Basically, landlords can evict tenants without giving a reason.

The city council is voting on an ordinance on Tuesday to give tenants some protections. Among them, tenants who are afraid to ask for repairs for fear of eviction can register with the city. This will give the tenant a six-month protection from eviction.

We spoke to San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo to see how he'd weigh in.
