The body of a man accused of wounding two Fremont police officers was found Thursday morning inside a home on Roberts Avenue in Fremont, law enforcement officials said.

The house caught fire after officers fired tear gas in an effort to force the suspect from the residence, police said.

The fire marked the end of an overnight standoff after a traffic stop turned violent Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect's name and age were not released. It was not immediately known if he died from the fire or from gunshot wounds sustained during the initial shooting, police said. No one else was injured in the fire. Fremont Police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said the man's body was found after a standoff that started when the suspect shot the locks off a door to a vacant home and barricaded himself inside.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, an officer attempted a traffic stop at Fremont and Washington Boulevards, according to officials. The incident started when the suspect backed into an officer's patrol car and a person inside the white pickup truck fired shots that injured the officer. The shooter and another suspect then ran away, prompting a manhunt that involved a house to house search that lasted well into the night, said Alameda County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Ray Kelly.

Wednesday evening residents were told to shelter in place in the area of Roberts Avenue, near Fremont and Washington Boulevards, as police helicopters were deployed and police dogs used to search yard-by-yard and door-to-door. The suspect was found barricaded inside the vacant house, leading to a multi-hour standoff.

One officer remains in critical condition. The second officer is in stable condition, Bosques said. Their names have not been released.
