Extra Funding for Cal State at Center of Labor Strife
California's annual budget is a game of winners and losers, and one of the perceived winners this year was the Cal State University system. The 23-campus system got an additional $97 million thanks in part to intense lobbying by students and faculty members. But the extra money has brought on a labor dispute with the faculty union, which is seeking a 5 percent. raise. Management is offering a 2 percent raise.

Substance abuse has ravaged Native American communities for generations. For our series Vital Signs, we traveled to Lake County to meet two Pomo Indian teenagers who want to change that through sports. They won a national essay competition about how addiction impacts their families. We caught up with them at the tail end of their football practice at Clear Lake High in Lakeport.
