Aldon Smith Hit With New Criminal Charges on Same Day He Signs With Raiders

Aldon Smith has probably learned to take the sweet with the sour, by now, though in truth it's been mostly the former lately.

Today the former 49ers defensive star got a dose of both.  This morning, the Raiders announced they have signed the former 49ers star to a one-year contract.

Subsequently the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office announced he's been charged with three misdemeanors relating to Smith's fifth arrest in four years. The charges are driving under the influence with a prior offense, hit and run with property damage, and vandalism.

Smith was suspended for the first nine games last season for violating the NFL's substance abuse and personal conduct policies. The league says he is currently eligible to play despite his latest arrest. But the NFL is still looking into that matter.

Smith will be arraigned on the misdemeanor charges on Oct. 6.
