Stopping Violence
Davon Ellis was walking to a store with friends last Saturday night when he was shot and killed. The high school freshman was just 14 years old. According to Oakland police, in the past five years 41 youths under the age of 18 have been killed in Oakland, most by gunshots. Another 670 kids have been wounded in shootings. We will talk to people on the front lines of trying to stop the violence that is devastating so many families. We'll also hear from students at MetWest High School about their hopes and fears for the future.
Guests:
• Ryan Smith, executive director of The Education Trust-West
• Sister Marian Castelluccio, director of Mental Health at Catholic Charities
• Olis Simmons, president and CEO of Youth UpRising
Clarification: We requested an interview with Antwan Wilson, the superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District, but he had a scheduling conflict. We hope to interview him soon.
