Pope Francis Announces Sainthood for Junipero Serra, Founder of California Missions
Some call Junipero Serra the father of modern-day California, in part because he founded the string of missions that dot the coast. Serra is also becoming a saint, arguably California's first. Pope Francis said Thursday he'll canonize the Franciscan priest when he visits the U.S. later this year. The Pope called Serra a "holy man" -- but that's not how many Native Americans see him.
Scientists Still Searching for Cause of Sea Star Die-Off
For a couple of years now, a virus has been attacking sea stars along the West Coast. The creatures are breaking out in lesions, turning to mush and dying. Scientists are calling it the "sea star wasting syndrome." A group of researchers in Santa Cruz are studying the outbreak.
