World Series Update: Royals Blow Giants Away in Game Six, 10-0

In Game 6 of the 2014 World Series, with the San Francisco Giants coming in with a 3-2 advantage and the Kansas City Royals on the verge of elimination, something not so funny happened on the way to the big party for Giants fans.

Playing before their home fans, the Royals erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and added another in the third to take a commanding 8-0 lead early. They added a ninth run in the fifth as the trend continued. And another in the seventh, making it 10-0, while the Giants' bats stayed silent.

It didn't figure to come out like this.

Coming into the game, the Giants were dominating the Royals in every significant statistical category. They were batting .299, the Royals .221.

Their OPS? Giants .759, the Royals .572.

San Francisco had outhit the Royals 52-36 -- by an average of more than three hits a game. They had outscored them by almost 2.5 runs per game, 27-15.

In perhaps the most lopsided stat of all, the patient Giants' hitters  had walked 18 times, the Royals only six in those first five games.

On the pitching front, the Giants had an ERA of 3.07 compared with 5.44 for the Royals.

WHIP? 0.95 Giants compared with 1.63 for the Royals.

As great as all those numbers might appear, one of the things that makes baseball a great game is that the stats coming into a game have very little to do with what actually happens on the field.

The Royals demonstrated that in Game 6. This was their game all the way.

Also worth noting: The Giants have won two straight World Series on the road, in 2010 at Texas, and 2012 at Detroit.

Game 7 is scheduled to start at 5:07 p.m. PDT Wednesday. Depending on what happens in the early innings, all eyes may be on the Giants' bullpen later in that game, where Madison Bumgarner is rumored to be ready to pitch.
