New School Spending Rules Emphasize Accountability
The California Board of Education has unanimously approved new rules governing how school districts should spend extra state funds for their neediest students. Under the new funding system, districts with large numbers of at-risk students get thousands of dollars more per child. But districts aren't only going to have to spend the money directly on the neediest students, they'll also have to show how they're spending the money.

In recent weeks, Los Angeles County supervisors have been wrestling with how to make sure their new Sheriff's Department watchdog gets the access he needs to provide effective oversight. The agency's top brass has been accused of allowing -- and even fostering -- a culture of violence among deputies in the County's main jail. We talk with Frank Stoltze, who covers crime and politics for KPCC in Los Angeles.
