S.F. Civil Grand Jury Targets Port

World Cup

Anthony Friedkin: The Gay Essay
Next weekend marks the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York City, the spark that touched off the Gay Liberation movement. As the LGBT community prepares to celebrate "Pride Week" in San Francisco, the de Young Museum presents a new photography exhibit of Anthony Friedkin's work, "The Gay Essay." Friedkin captured provocative black and white images of queer life in San Francisco and L.A. in the late 1960s and early 70s, when homosexuality was still illegal in California. It took more than 40 years for Friedkin's project to get a full public exhibition. Scott Shafer reports.
