Scientists, students and volunteers are descending on the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on Friday and Saturday to record as many plant and animal species as possible in 24 hours. It's part of an event called a BioBlitz. The goal is to transform park visitors into citizen scientists, as they help document the park's biodiversity. (Andy H./Flickr)

salmon
The drought has forced federal wildlife officials to truck juvenile chinook salmon from the Coleman National Fish Hatchery, near Red Bluff, to the Delta. The salmon lift began earlier this week, with tankers carrying the fish down the Sacramento Valley to the Delta town of Rio Vista. Hatchery officials say they're likely to truck all 12 million of Coleman's fall-run chinook, and about 18 million more from state facilities, by the time the operation is over in June.
