7:35 a.m. Update: BART is reopening the Fremont, Union City and South Hayward stations and resuming full service on the line. The agency is saying delays are expected as trains begin to run along the affected parts of the Fremont line.
Original post: BART's Fremont, Union City and South Hayward stations are closed this morning as police investigate a fatality on the tracks.
Riders arriving at those stations, the southernmost on BART's Fremont line, are being advised to go to the Bay Fair station in San Leandro or find alternate transportation. BART hasn't given a time for reopening, saying only that it hopes to have trains running again along the affected line "sometime after sunrise."
Shuttle buses are running between Fremont and Union City — little help for commuters bound for Oakland or San Francisco. AC Transit is offering those with BART tickets a free ride from Fremont to Bay Fair.
BART says the fatality occurred at about 11:30 p.m. when an apparent trespasser was struck and killed by a train. BART spokesman Jim Allison said that evidence was being gathered from a long stretch of track — about 300 yards or so.
