n of Polk and Ellis streets
A memorial stands at the intersection of Polk and Ellis streets in San Francisco, where a 6-year-old girl was struck by a car and killed on New Year's Eve. The girl's mother and brother were also injured and survived.  The driver, who had worked for UberX, a Transportation Network Company, was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter. gentrification protest2
About 100 protesters and residents marched on New Year's day from the 24th Street BART to the 16th Street BART station, in protest of an increased police presence around 16th Street BART and police enforcement of evictions. They claim the Mission is being turned into "a playground for the rich." (Deborah Svoboda / KQED)

bell
A 2,100 pound bronze bell from the sixteenth century is used in a traditional Buddhist New Years ritual at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. The bell is struck 108 times, representing the number of desires that humans wrestle with, according to Buddhist belief. (Sara Bloomberg / KQED)

Continuing a 35-year tradition of unorthodox ceremonial gatherings out in the Bay, the Cal Sailing Club hosted a New Year’s Day Clam Bake on a muddy sand bar between the Emeryville and Berkeley marinas Wednesday evening. The sand bar, known to local sailors and paddlers as Ashby Shoal, only appears above water at extremely low tides. (Paul Kamen / Berkeleyside)
