Before digging into your mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and turkey (or the vegan, gluten-free variations on the Thanksgiving feast) you might be thinking of joining the thousands of people in the Bay Area and beyond who will be doing a Turkey Trot. The events are usually 5- or 10-kilometer runs or walks benefiting local charities.

Bay Area
- San Jose Silicon Valley Turkey Trot
Events: Kids' fun run, 5k and 10k run/walk, 10k wheelchair. Starting line: Santa Clara and Market streets, downtown San Jose. Registration: Online registration only. Deadline to sign up is 6 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 28. - Marin Turkey Trot
Events: 1 mile, 5k, 10k run/walk. Starting line: Indian Valley College, Novato. Online registration closes Tuesday night, Nov. 26. On-site registration starts at 7 a.m. Thursday. - Solano Turkey Trot
Events: Kids' fun run, 5k run/walk, 10k run. Starting line: Fairfield Campus of Solano Community College. Registration: Online registration is closed. Race-day registration opens at 6:30 a.m. Thursday. - Piedmont Turkey Trot
Event: 3-mile run/walk. Starting line: Piedmont High School. Registration: Online registration closes at midnight Tuesday. On-site registration at Piedmont High School 2-5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday starting at 7 a.m.
Sacramento Area
Sacramento Turkey Trot — Run to Feed the Hungry
Events: 5k run/walk, 10k run. Starting line: J Street, at entrance to Sacramento State University. Registration: Pre-register at Sacramento REI store through Wednesday. Race-day registration opens at starting line at 7 a.m. Thursday.
