For nearly 25 years, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation banned inmates held in isolation, known as security housing units, from having a current photo to keep or share with family and friends. Over 12,000 inmates at Pelican Bay and Crescent City prisons have begun a hunger strike to protest harsh conditions like this. Lonnie Rose spent more than 10 years in two security housing units. He recently was released from prison under Proposition 36, which allowed the release or parole of nonviolent third-strike offenders. Here he holds two photos of himself, one taken in 1999 (left) and the other taken in March. (Adithya Sambamurthy / The Center for Investigative Reporting)
