Airport Delays Continue as SFO Cleanup Crew Works on Runway 28L

Travelers are still experiencing flight delays and cancellations at San Francisco International Airport Wednesday, but relief is on the way.

According to SFO spokesman Doug Yakel, the airport is "still experiencing delays due to runway closure, (with) average delays of 45 minutes (and) 56 flight cancellations. We advise passengers to check with their airline for the status of their flight prior to coming to the airport."

SFO also tweeted that its cleanup crew is beginning the cleanup of debris from the crash Saturday of Asiana Airlines Flight 214.

Family members of the passengers on Flight 214 are continuing to arrive in San Francisco. Asiana officials said four Korean passengers had family members arrive late Tuesday, while five additional Korean families are heading to the Bay Area today.

Two more Korean families will fly to San Francisco on Friday, according to the airline.

An Asiana employee also escorted a Chinese group of 12 family members and six government officials on a flight from Shanghai, China, to San Francisco via Incheon, South Korea, airline officials said. Asiana Airlines is paying all travel and hotel costs for the victims' families.

The families of the two 16-year-old Chinese girls who were killed in the crash arrived in the Bay Area Monday night. The girls have been identified as Ye Meng Yuan and Wang Lin Jia.

The teens were part of a group of 35 Chinese students and chaperones from China's Zhejiang province who were heading to a Southern California school for a three-week summer program.

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, San Francisco General Hospital released the following update on patients from the Asiana Airlines accident:

• Grand total of 66 patients. The largest number of patients treated by a hospital from this accident. There were 35 adults and 31 children.
• Total in critical condition: three, including one child. Their injuries include spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, abdominal injuries, internal bleeding, road rash and fractures.
• Note that one patient in critical condition has been upgraded to serious since yesterday. This patient is an adult.
• Total discharged: 58.
• Total in hospital beds: eight – including the three critical. The remaining patients’ conditions range from serious to fair to good. These patients are two children and six adults.
• No patients remain in the emergency department.
