With the passage of Proposition 30 -- Governor Jerry Brown's tax hike to fund education -- many students, parents and teachers are breathing sighs of relief. The measure headed off $6 billion in cuts to schools and colleges.

Democrats Gain Power, But What Will They Do With It?
The votes are still being counted, but Democrats appear to have won two-thirds supermajorities in both the state Senate and Assembly. They'll now be able to pass legislation without any Republican votes -- and they can even override a veto from the governor.

Redistricting and the state's top-two primary system led to an unusual number of competitive races, and a few upsets. They include parts of the Inland Empire, where former Republican strongholds gave way to a siege of Democratic newcomers.
