California was The Golden State in more ways than one this Olympics.

A total of 93 medals were won by U.S. athletes who reside in California or list their hometown in the state, including 52 gold medals, according to data from the U.S. Olympic Committee and NBC's Olympics site. Those numbers equal about 35 percent of the total number of medals and gold medals won by U.S. athletes. (A total of 256 medals were awarded to U.S. Olympians, including 147 gold medals, more than any other country for both.)

In addition to the gold medals, California's athletes took home 28 silvers and 13 bronzes.

The most decorated Olympians from the state were Richmond swimmer Dana Vollmer, who set two world records and an Olympic record on her way to winning three gold medals; Berkeley Swimmer Nathan Adrian, who won two gold medals and a silver; and Southern California residents Allyson Felix, Carmelita Jeter and Rebecca Soni, who also brought home three medals each.
