SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Authorities say three major tuna packers failed to meet federal requirements for the amount of fish in their cans and have reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with several Southern California district attorney offices.

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis announced Friday that Bumble Bee Foods LLC, StarKist Co. and Tri-Union Seafoods LLC agreed to pay $3.3 million.

District attorneys in San Diego, Riverside and Marin counties opened the case in 2010 following an investigation by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Dumanis says the companies failed to meet federal standards for tuna in the cans relative to ingredients such as vegetable broth and added flavors.

Bumble Bee Foods and Tri-Union Seafoods _ of Chicken of the Sea _ are based in San Diego. StarKist is headquartered in Pittsburgh.
