For San Bruno residents, the 9/9 gas explosion that rocked the town last year and the 9/11 terrorist attacks will always be linked.

That's what San Bruno city councilmember Ken Ibarra told KQED's Amy Standen at the picnic the town hosted to remember the events this weekend.

After a solemn memorial event for those who died in the pipeline blast on Friday, today's gathering was conceived as a way for residents to gather and assess how far they've come in the past year.

You can find complete KQED coverage of the San Bruno explosion here.
