The lights illuminating the catwalks that construction crews will use to string cable through the Bay Bridge’s Self-Anchored Suspension Span were switched on last night. Bridge officials say construction of the East Span, which was damaged in the 1989 earthquake, is now entering the home stretch, with a scheduled opening in 2013.

To mark the occasion, Caltrans yesterday invited members of the non-vertigo-afflicted media to the top of the new tower, about 525 feet above the Bay. Our reporter, Caitlin Esch, managed to snap these photos without the aid of an airline sickness bag.
