The former Oak Knoll Naval Hospital was demolished today. They blowed it up real good....

You can read a little bit about the history of the hospital, which opened in 1942 and closed in 1996 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure program, at the California State Military Museum web site.

The Oakland Tribune wrote up a recent history of residential development plans for the site that went poof with the Lehman Brother collapse in 2008. What's next is up in the air... But perhaps you'll enjoy this musical slideshow tribute to the hospital posted on YouTube.
