An Oakland elementary school was locked down and evacuated Monday afternoon after an anonymous caller reported that a man carrying a rifle had entered the campus, though no gunman was ever found. "We found no evidence that the man was even on the campus, but we have to take every call like this very, very seriously," said Oakland police spokeswoman Holly Joshi. Oakland schools police Chief Pete Sarna said it appears likely the call was a hoax and that it was placed from a school phone line.

Update 3:24 p.m. California Beat is tweeting that no gunman has been found at La Escuelita Elementary School. More on the story from AP:
An Oakland elementary school has been placed on lockdown after an anonymous tip of a possible gunman inside, but school officials say all the students are safe.
Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint says all students except for one class already have been evacuated from La Escuelita Elementary School. Flint says the remaining class of special needs students is not in danger.
Police are searching the campus, and no gunman has been found.
Flint says the district received a phone call around 12:45 p.m. Monday from a man who said someone had entered the school armed with a rifle.
Flint says all the children are accounted for and are being taken to a parking lot for parents to pick them up.

In response to a query from KQED's Cy Musiker, Oakland Police Spokeswoman Holly Joshi sent this email:
La Escuelita school is being evacuated due to a caller saying that there was a male armed with a gun entering into one of the classrooms.
KQED News intern Katrina Schwartz just spoke with Troy Flint, the press contact for the Oakland Unified School District. He confirmed that La Esquilita is on "lock-down" although he would not confirm why. He said there is a large school and police presence there and that they are going to begin evacuating the students within minutes.
