The long and winding road to same-sex marriage has thus far been twistier than the MacArthur Maze, has featured many detours and dead-ends, and disappears way over the horizon when you try to glimpse an end. And yesterday's announcement by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that it was kicking the case to California's Supreme Court for guidance will do nothing to expedite matters, that's for sure.

Indeed, the path has been so convoluted, we thought a timeline illustrating just how we got to this particular point might come in handy. The following, outlining events from 2002 to yesterday, was created by KQED News producer Lisa Pickoff-White.
