The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will have a full plate Tuesday. It's facing a reported ultimatum to give Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, the Bay Area's wealthiest human, to deliver on a package of goodies including long-term waterfront development rights or risk losing the Cup to an unnamed bidder.

The board is also slated to talk again about its process for selecting an interim mayor to replace Gavin Newsom, who will soon move to Sacramento to don the raiment of lieutenant governor. How hard is it to pick someone to fill the mayor's office for the rest of Newsom's term (which ends a little more than a year from now)?

Here's a little puppet theater from two local Web pundits, Melissa Griffin and Beth Spotswood. We don't vouch that they've got all the facts straight. For instance, they refer at one point to Newsom being appointed lieutenant governor (hey—he won the office at the ballot box last time we looked). But they amply demonstrate how byzantine the process could get.
