- Who are those guys in orange and black uniforms that have now scored 20 runs in two World Series games–a whole week’s worth of offense during the regular season–and what have they done with the Giants? San Francisco now leads Texas two games to none after last night’s 9 – 0 win. That’s a score that would be enough to end some softball games early under the “slaughter rule.” Game 3 is Saturday, in Texas.
- The new Field poll is out, showing Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer with an eight-point lead, 49 to 41 percent. The results line up with other recent polls showing Boxer ahead from three to nine points. The Field poll has a margin of error of 3.2 points. - The Field Poll also found Republican Meg Whitman trailing Democrat Jerry Brown by 10, which includes a 16-point gap among women and a 30-point deficit among Latinos. Of the latter, this probably isn’t going to be a positive game changer: Yesterday in an interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, Whitman said she thought her former housekeeper, undocumented immigrant Nicky Diaz Santillan, should be deported. Her exact answer to a question form Van Susteren:
“Well, the answer is it breaks my heart, but she should be deported because she forged documents and she lied about her immigration status,” Whitman said. “And it breaks my heart. Gloria Allred pulled off a political stunt. And you know what? On Nov. 3, no one’s going to care about Nicky Diaz. But the law is the law and we live in the rule of law. It’s important.”
- Johannes Mehserle, the former BART cop convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Oscar Grant, gave an interview to Rita Williams of KTVU News. The exchange took place at Los Angeles County Jail, where Mehserle awaits a Nov 5 sentencing. In the interview, Mehserle says he is not a racist and gives his version of the shooting. - A jury found Cindy Zuniga innocent but her husband Marcos guilty in a San Jose resisting-arrest case. The Zunigas were arrested after an encounter with police officer Joseph Paolini, who shocked Mrs. Zuniga with a stun gun and shot Mr. Zuniga in the face, disfiguring him. The San Jose Mercury News said “Marcos is likely to face probation in the politically charged case, not a jail sentence, for resisting arrest and battery — both misdemeanors.”

- FEMA has rejected California’s request for disaster aid for the San Bruno fire. From the San Mateo County Times:
The Federal Emergency Management Agency determined the damage was “not of such severity and magnitude” as to overwhelm the state and local agencies that responded to the Sept. 9 blast, according to the letter that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger received from the agency Friday. The letter goes on to say that help from other sources, including PG&E, will be enough to meet the needs of the event. However, FEMA will reimburse the state for up to 75 percent of the firefighting costs, agency spokesman Bradley Carroll wrote.
When asked about her comments at a campaign event later, Whitman said:
“”She is here illegally. She’s breaking the law right now, so we’ll leave it for the federal authorities.”
