San Francisco is going to stop charging jail inmates for phone calls.

Have you ever wondered how much it costs to make a phone call from jail?

An in-state call from the San Francisco county jail lasting about 15 minutes costs $2.10, which adds up pretty quickly if you make a couple calls a day, are broke and in jail.

Mayor London Breed and Sheriff Vicki Hennessy want to stop charging for phone calls and eliminate the 43% markup on items in the jail store.

Inmates — or primarily their families — pay about $1.7 million a year for phone calls and a fat markup at the commissary.

If inmates stay in touch with family and support networks while they're in jail, they do much better upon release and are less likely to return to jail.

It sure seems to me like that is worth far more than $1.7 million.
