Gov. Gavin Newsom hit the brakes on former Gov. Jerry Brown's signature high-speed rail project, saying "the current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long."

Though Newsom suggested it might happen someday, it looks like high-speed rail between San Francisco and Los Angeles is dead.

The governor said he plans to focus on the Central Valley portion of the rail project that is currently under construction, touting the economic and environmental benefits to residents who "have suffered too many years of neglect from policymakers here in Sacramento."
